finding inspiration by lazing about

From sheila heti’s “letter of recommendation: sick days”:

Some of our most accomplished and creative people were known for working from bed or a bath or finding inspiration by lazing about. They include:

Walt Whitman
Ludwig van Beethoven
Benjamin Franklin
Archimedes
Mark Twain
Frida Kahlo
Truman Capote

transfigured in the disco light

from justin torres’ “In praise of Latin Night at the Queer Club”:

Outside, tomorrow, hangovers, regrets, the grind. Outside, tomorrow, the struggle to effect change. But inside, tonight, none of that matters. Inside, tonight, the only imperative is to love. Lap the bar, out for a smoke, back inside, the ammonia and sweat and the floor slightly tacky, another drink, the imperative is to get loose, get down, find religion, lose it, find your hips locked into another’s, break, dance on your own for a while — but you didn’t come here to be a nun — find your lips pressed against another’s, break, find your friends, dance. The only imperative is to be transformed, transfigured in the disco light. To lighten, loosen, see yourself reflected in the beauty of others. You didn’t come here to be a martyr, you came to live, papi. To live, mamacita. To live, hijos. To live, mariposas.

keep thinking about this

from “pete souza: photographing the real barack obama”:

In a moving monochrome image, Souza showed three-year-old Clark Reynolds looking up in awe as Obama touches him on the cheek. The photograph is taken from child height and brilliantly captures a child’s-eye view of the president. We only see Obama’s hand caressing Clark’s face. Unlike the ones in all paintings and photographs of all previous presidents, it is not a white hand. How can anyone say that means nothing?
