Or perhaps you\u2019re driving up some precarious mountain pass, when you feel strangely moved to jerk your steering wheel to the right and sail clear off the road. American psychologists <a href=\"https:\/\/cpnp.org\/resource\/reference\/88955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2012<\/a> published a paper in which this feeling was dubbed the \u201chigh place phenomenon\u201d (and their study suggested, by the way, that its presence does not necessarily signal suicidal ideation), but the French term for the phenomenon is much more alluring, as French words so often are: <em>l\u2019appel du vide<\/em>, or \u201cthe call of the void.\u201d As the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once observed, the emotion is so unsettling because of the way it \u201ccreates an unnerving, shaky sensation of not being able to trust one\u2019s own instincts.\u201d It\u2019s a reminder, then, to perhaps <em>not <\/em>always let your emotions rule your<span class=\"widont\"> behavior<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from &#8220;10 Extremely Precise Words for Emotions You Didn\u2019t Even Know You Had&#8221;: L\u2019appel du vide: You\u2019re waiting for the train when an inexplicable thought flashes into your mind: What if you jumped off the platform?
