At this point Georgia and Ira, Yo La Tengo\u2019s principal singer\/songwriters, had been married to each other for more than fifteen years, and the content of the record showed. The lyrics to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=92EapONAnGI\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLast Days of Disco,\u201d<\/a> sung by Ira, are a reminiscence about budding attraction:<\/p>\n<p><em>Saw you at a party<\/em><br \/>\n<em> You asked me to dance<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Said music was great for dancing<\/em>.<br \/>\n<em> I don\u2019t really dance much<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But this time I did<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And I was glad that I did this time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In my mind he\u2019s hearing a song like the Turtle\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K2qmiyzo9Ws\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHappy Together\u201d<\/a>\u2014something so relentlessly positive about love that it can\u2019t possibly be completely true. If I were to choose two songs that, taken together, described the full spectrum of love, I might choose the Turtles\u2019 classic and pair it with the very next track on <em>And Then Nothing<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fEjT-TS7QlY\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Crying of Lot G,\u201d<\/a> in which Ira ruminates on everyday arguments that, for all the tension they create, boil down to \u201cThe way that I feel when you laugh is like laughing \/ the way that I feel when you cry is so bad.\u201d Truly, this might be my favorite love song of all time, for no other reason than the simple perfection of that line. Later in the record Georgia responds with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mRRO2BXn7ns\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTears Are In Your Eyes,\u201d<\/a> a darker reflection of the same sentiment. That is what marriage is about, right? So happy together, sure, and sad together. You name the emotion\u2014excited, depressed, blissful, bored\u2014<em>together<\/em>.
