loved jenna wortham’s “There’s Only Love and Fear: On Cher’s Twitter” (though am already a somewhat-unconditional cher fan):

Sometimes Cher herself seems mystified by her cryptic missives. Take, for example, a recent post in which she posted a gorgeous, lavender-washed photograph of her younger self, midsway on the dance floor, alongside the inexplicably confusing caption: “Girls just want to have Fun … Was a crazy day … wanted to post this in a.m … But Don’t think I Did,” followed by several emojis, including the ghost and the “tears of joy” smiley face. The day after Christmas, she wrote, “Adults are SO PACMAN,” and a few weeks before that, she posted a message that simply said: “We Should B Vigilant, Aware Of Our Surroundings‼️ Something‼️Say Something‼️ONE BIG CATCH,WE ALL HAVE OUR GLUDED 2 OUR PHONES‼️WENOTHING.”

A decent number of her tweets seem as if they might have been cut-and-pasted into the wrong bubble on her iPad, as if they were meant for a private interaction, rather than for consumption by the 2.7 million people who follow her: “Ask Andy, what he wants me to do.” On another occasion, without any context or explanation, she fired off a tweet that said, “Stanley Tucci is a Brat.”

you have to understand

from danyel smith’s amazing “when whitney hit the high note”, about houston singing the national anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl:

You have to understand. Key to American blues is the notion that by performing them and by experiencing them being performed, one can escape them. “I will be free,” sang this black American woman to a mostly white, tucked-in-tuxes audience attending an event at which black achievement has been and remains segregated and minimized. This is our most familiar pop dance. This is white American affluence being comforted by the performance of black freedom — and so, feeling forgiven. The polished intonations. The buffed exertion. The testimony. This is the conflation of mass sport and mass music. This is bodies and souls at work. This — one of America’s most influential creations and biggest imports — is the uplift of big blues.

according to the person

from the new york times:

“Didn’t I tell you this was going to happen?” Ms. Ripa said to Mr. Davis at the meeting, according to the person. “I told you two years ago this was going to happen.”

A few minutes after the meeting ended, ABC publicly announced Mr. Strahan’s departure. Ms. Ripa later let the network know she would not appear on Wednesday.

Ms. Ripa was angry, this person said, because she perceived that “Good Morning America” was being given priority over “Live.” Ms. Ripa declined to comment.

With at least three careers behind me, I’ve had a lot of time to learn the myriad skills needed to run an art business. And it’s not just the skills — it’s the actual experience of knowing that things will almost always work out fine. It sounds like a small thing, but it is vital to any venture.

just read david foster wallace’s “Federer as Religious Experience” (footnotes delivering the final heart clench) (recommended by lin-manuel miranda!!!!) and leah reich’s “Letter of Recommendation: Terro Liquid Ant Bait” (surprising winner, was not compelled by title, but it delivers) (“If you don’t suffer from anxiety, an ant infestation is a great substitute”).

more from reich:

There’s no shortage of suggestions on the Internet for how to manage anxieties and ants. Try these herbs! Consider juicing! Get over it! Oh, you mean ants? Try peppermint oil, lemon juice, coffee grounds. Sprinkle cinnamon. Draw chalk lines. Spray Raid and then wonder what’s in Raid and whether you should be inhaling it. Beg the ants to move into your neighbor’s house. None of this works.

speaking of, sleep troubles/racing heart have reached an all-time high, if that is even possible. today i read to kids at the elementary school, immediately terrible at discipline and accidentally let the kids JOG to the library, where we read pigsty, even though the message about cleaning your room is kinda lame (tidy rooms seem like the least important lesson) (or maybe it’s about teamwork?) (“many hooves make light work”), but the pig drawings are pretty cute and we only had 15 minutes. ONWARD.
