what the fuck happened between the NBA and the dunkin’?

chris herren was my hero in high school.  i saw him play at an AAU tournament in providence when i was 14.  nobody could guard him.  he was fearless, he played like a fucking maniac.  i wanted to play just like him.  a book came out around that time called ‘fall river dreams’ which chronicled his junior season at durfee high in fall river, a tough mill town in southern mass.  it was my favorite book.  at that time i only read basketball books.

he had a really good college career and a brief pro career, which seemed to be cut short due to injuries.

i hadnt thought about him in a while until i read an article a couple years ago saying that he crashed his car into a dunkin donuts at 8am with a needle sticking out of his arm.  he was shooting up heroin with his daughter in the back seat.  he had just dropped her off at school.  he died briefly and then came back to life.  the last time i saw him he had a celtics uniform on.  what the fuck happened between the NBA and the dunkin’?

last year, he came out with a memoir called ‘basketball junkie’ and he tells us what happened.
