from the pitchfork interview with hiss golden messenger:

Favorite Kind of Pie

I like an apple pie. I love a berry pie. I made, for Thanksgiving, I made a honey pie, which was basically a cheese pie with lots of honey and some salt. It was a salty honey pie. It was insane.

a newfound culinary interest in dessert-making

New York’s sanitation commissioner, John Doherty, agreed to delay retirement to help the new de Blasio administration. Nicole Bengiveno/The New York TimesPhoto by Nicole Bengiveno/The New York Times

“A Rough Final Winter for New York’s Sanitation Chief,” about veteran ny sanitation chief john j. doherty, who postponed retirement to help new mayor bill de blasio:

If it has been a long winter for all New Yorkers, it has been an even longer one for Mr. Doherty.

“It’s a little depressing on some days, no doubt about it,” the commissioner said in an interview on Wednesday, his staccato Staten Island twang at full speed despite a 3 a.m. wake-up call and a morning of monitoring plowing efforts across the city.

A year ago, Mr. Doherty — who joined the Sanitation Department as a trash collector in 1960, before Mr. de Blasio was born — had toyed with the idea of stepping down, and pursuing a newfound culinary interest in dessert-making. The man once nicknamed “Mr. Snow” for his expertise in the art and theory of slush removal thought he might, for once, choose to relax.

the soft emotion in 2k14

LOL that this is from something called The 9 smartest marriage tips ever but Stephanie Coontz only speaks the truth and cannot be denied.

I’m all about looking for the soft emotion in 2k14:

“One of my favorite pieces of advice come from an observation I once heard from two fellow Council on Contemporary Families board members, psychologist Philip and Carolyn Cowan,” Coontz tells me. ”They said to always look for the soft emotion that lies beneath the hard one.” She explains, “Since then I’ve tried to respond to the soft emotion — the fear, anxiety or embarrassment that is hiding behind the anger or accusation — rather than to the hard one. It helps in all sorts of relationships, not just marriage.”
