One of my jobs was to cut the tips off green beans. I tried to outsmart the green beans, lining them up like soldiers and cutting off the bottoms and then lining them up again, but my father said that too much of them got cut off that way because I wasn’t fastidious about my lines. I was always looking for a shortcut. Once I put a towel outside on the deck and laid leaves of lettuce on in like tiny green sunbathers. My father poked his head out the screen door. “No.”
