from you must remember this: mgm stories, part 9: spencer tracy — whose life is surprisingly dark (week-long benders, car crashes, affairs, etc.):
[the 1933 film] man’s castle pitted [spencer] tracy’s dapper hobo opposite loretta young. both catholics, young and tracy had an interesting meet-cute. legend has it that she heard him mutter “damn” under his breath on the set, and asked him for a quarter for her cuss jar. tracy gave her a twenty-dollar bill and said, “here’s 20, sister, go fuck yourself.”

heron oblivion, photo by alex marks
so the festival is over and it was basically totally awesome? HARD. but awesome. and also there were some bumps. but mostly awesome. ok some really dumb tiny bumps but not till the very very very end and actually it was all basically magical. i can’t believe it. it’s a week later and i had so much to say but now i can hardly feel it. success is ephemeral. strange highlights:
- this text i sent to alexa on thursday night, the opening night:

- cool ass old folks
- heron oblivion, who were indeed incredible, their set was a combination of joy, weight, seriousness, real feeling, graciousness. a perfect score.
- other highlights: mary lattimore, hailu mergia, pill, dungen — dungen scoring the adventures of prince achmed — truly amazing
- a former crush was in town covering the festival (12 years, can it be) and it was surprisingly still zingy. i think missed connections are missed for a reason, but…the zing is real, inexplicable, bittersweet. though also the same reasons why crush never advanced are still there — for example, crush didn’t even mention me or tag me in his wrap-up instagram post and what is that about? when i’m the co-creator of this thing and he knows it and couldn’t stop gushing about me? i can’t believe i just mentioned not being mentioned in an instagram post. obviously it’s all kinda bullshit.
i have nothing else to say, i think. it was intense. they want me to do it next year but i think…no. it was so satisfying ultimately but it ate at my life for six hard months and the pleasure was complex. TBD.

guys, last night i woke up in the middle of the night, was a bit disoriented, the cops had pulled someone over near our house and the lights were flashing in our window. i had to go to the bathroom and was heading there when suddenly i was just lying on the floor of the bathroom. couldn’t figure out where i was or how i got there and it took me a second to realize where i was at all. i got up and was so dizzy and suddenly sweating and my shoulder was hurting and i was so scared that my weird hand injury had spread up my arm to my shoulder, so i got back into bed as quickly as possible. i told ross about it this morning and we guess that i fainted?! hence the shoulder pain (and not via traveling pain condition). first time fainted. mark it up to incredible stress. to working all the time. i hear about people who work all the time, run 18 companies and do this, do that, and i really don’t know how they do it. i don’t have the right constitution. i’m really best suited for _______________.

from an article about leslie jones (more on her in a bit):
A month later, she was on a bill with Jamie Foxx, who was then a touring comic. “I was doing jokes about white churches versus black churches, and imitating my uncle’s stutter. I was terrible.” The audience booed her off the stage. Then Foxx performed. “It was, like, a religious feeling, watching him,” Jones said. “I had never seen a real comedian before, at least not in person.”
After the show, Foxx took her to a Fatburger. “You could be good, but you don’t have shit to talk about yet,” he told her. “You need to get your heart broken, have some bad jobs—live life for a while.”

from ny times “unpublished black history” — this entry about aretha frankin’s concert at the apollo in june 1971, and the journalist c. gerald fraser who wrote about the show (and tried to interview aretha):
…the Apollo concert he [fraser] described, and the way he described it, are both marvelous:
“Inside, the thousands of black people who saw and heard Miss Franklin were more than an audience. They were part of a black interaction — they came not only to see and hear “Lady Soul,” “Soul Sister No. 1,” “The Queen of Soul” and all those other labels she bears, but also to participate with her in an exultation of their blackness.”
The article went on to quote a fan who said Miss Franklin “has the genius of combining all forms of black culture into music,” and an Apollo employee who said her show was “the most overwhelming thing we have ever had in this theater.”

from cup of jo:
“When I was little, my parents would leave $1 and a note from the tooth fairy, so I did the same with my daughter. I upped the ante, though: I wrote rhyming poems every time in flowery handwriting. Also — and I should preface this by saying that we are Jewish — on the subway one morning, Lila asked me point blank, “Wait, is the tooth fairy real?” I was taken by surprise, totally unprepared, but I felt that at her age (she was 8 or so) I couldn’t lie to her face, so I said, “Well, no.” She was shocked and devastated, and had so many questions — so who writes the notes? Who leaves the money? Etc. And I told her. She couldn’t believe it — “Parents?!?!” And I said, yeah, it’s like Santa Claus. And she said, “SANTA CLAUS IS PARENTS??!” — Anna
