can’t stop thinking about the roosevelts?

having very intense response to that ken burns doc about the roosevelts. cannot stop thinking about FDR and when i start talking about him, i get v. worked up. “he didn’t get polio till he was 39!” “he wasn’t even in office when he got polio! he was in-between everything and had to work himself back in!” “he never walked again!” “he was basically unlikable as a teenager!” i don’t know what the emotion is but maybe a combo of sadness, loneliness, incredulity, admiration, some awe? and how he overcame so much, and fought for so much, when he didn’t have to?

[though his racial record — not great]

also he was the manager of his high school baseball team (!), which he called “thankless,” very true, i was manager of our middle school swim team, and it was thankless/humiliating. prob would have passed knowing what i know now but who knows. (ugh and why would you ever force middle school girls to wear their bathing suits in the yearbook photo?)

IT ME
