the mentalist

meant to reblog ages ago from the imitable steve hely, mostly because the mentalist makes me laugh and the article about earl sweatshirt is interesting (be sure to check out the slideshow, HUMANITY, SAMOA, WATERFALLS, FUNNY PATTERNED SHORT SLEEVE BUTTON DOWNS):

Not my beat, but I just read the NY Times article about him [Earl Sweatshirt]:

In Samoa he was taking courses and speaking with therapists. He swam with whales and earned a scuba diving license, watched every episode of “The Mentalist” on DVD, put his classmates onto Lil B, began learning how to play piano. He read Manning Marable’s Malcolm X biography and Richard Fariña’s counterculture fiction.

Interesting article about fame, being a good person, mothers, etc.

boredom, dirty hair, vacation brain

today has not been mad productive. in fact today has been a waster of a day. it’s very hot in the office (a/c is busted), and i got here late, and didn’t have time to wash my hair, so my hair is in a weird top bun, and i don’t feel like working on any of my work, really just feel like learning about and listening to music, OUT LOUD, NOT ON HEADPHONES, an impossibility in the hot office with other coworkers, which makes me just want to flop around and be kind of ar-nery.

really what it boils down to is i just am ready to be on vacation. my mind is already on vacation, honestly. it’s like when you take finals and then you have two weeks just for nothing until school is out, except in my case, i DO have things to do, but brain is unable to accept any of them and just wants to be vacationing. in this state, self is very complainy about work, i actually said out loud today to my coworker: “i don’t even LIKE doing that [main responsibility of my job].” COOL.

i kind of had this reaction to snow white and the huntsman, too:

The cool hipster dude behind us kept scoffing loudly whenever something magical happened onscreen, which I thought was pretty funny. Like, a beautiful white horse bows down to Snow White and lets her ride it, and the dude behind us goes “Oh yeah right!”

BOOK IT!

from karen russell’s really excellent new yorker piece about reading as a kid:

In the early nineties, Pizza Hut sponsors Book It!, to promote reading. For every ten books you read, you get a certificate for a free, one-topping pizza. At the end of each month, you come home from Mrs. Sicius’s fifth-grade class and slam down the Book It! certificate in front of your parents like a hunter dropping a deer carcass on the kitchen table. Book that, Family! We are eating tonight!

not a great pool

not pictured: the pigeons surrounding the pool, the pigeons drinking out of the pool, the pigeon feathers in the pool, and the pool cleaner who asked biff if the pool “looked clean enough”
