i was in houston for a week for my wedding shower and connie’s baby shower and here are some things:
OTHER STUFF BUT I CAN’T REMEMBER
from the new york times weekend briefing:
It was a simple plan. A college student in Kentucky would crawl through a building’s air duct in the wee hours to steal a copy of a final exam.
But the student, and another one helping him, were caught in the act by the instructor. They’ve been charged with felony burglary.
“It’s an unusual set of circumstances,” a University of Kentucky spokesman said. “It also underscores how late our faculty work.”

chef and cookbook author samin nosrat discussing her week in food on grub street:
Then we went to my favorite New York restaurant, Via Carota, where I was meeting my agent and the VP of my production company for a celebratory lunch. The book is being turned into a docuseries. I get to go to nine countries. I made up the number nine. Many countries. So that’s crazy. I’ve been a cook since I was 20 years old. I have worked for $10, $12, $14, and $18 an hour. And then I became a writer, which, as you know, is an equally not-so-lucrative career — and this very interesting and wonderful and strange thing, to have this moment where, all of a sudden, the world is recognizing you. You all of a sudden have legitimacy, after so many years of just being a person who had her head down, working her butt off, feeling always sort of overlooked. So I’ve gone to a lot of therapy, as I’ve mentioned. This is an interesting week to be doing this with you, because it’s just a really fun and weird week in my life. There has never been something like this.
i have so much to say about this. first, clearly i relate to being a person who always has her head down. just working. grinding, really. second. nosrat has a great attitude about snacks. third, i also love via carota, only been there once but see my post about buttery sheets and white wine and amish waitresses. FOUR. there was this crazy time right before i moved from san francisco (2000?) where my friend jonah and i went to the chez panisse cafe a few times, just off the cuff, as a real life everyday indulgence (that jonah paid for!). THE END
columbus, texas
only listened to two episodes, but the end of the first one, “sneaker wars,” about boston celtic dee brown and michael jordan’s run-in an alley is so funny and poignant. recommend.
(be warned, though, that dunkumentaries has a distracting and grating amount of ’90s atmospheric background music)
avoiding math gre homework by finally reading this essay by playwright lynn nottage, about learning to drive at 50:
Then I reached the do-or-die point, and six weeks before leaving for Oregon, I finally got the courage to walk to the D.M.V. at the Atlantic Center in Brooklyn and get my learner’s permit. Two weeks later, I took the five-hour driver’s ed course in a grimy auto school that seemed frozen in time, perhaps 1975.
I watched a series of safety videos, one of which was narrated by Bruce Jenner. Some of the tapes were so antiquated that they featured people puffing on cigarettes while cruising in convertibles without seatbelts.
