To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget.

depressing episode of the daily today about the opioid epidemic and fentanyl, featuring this interview with josh lidell, which struck a chord:
my name is josh lidell. i started doing drugs when i was 12 years old. just searching…just trying to find where i fit in in this world…led me down a road of a 12-year addiction. that led me to sticking needles in my arms. to being addicted to heroin and opiates and fentanyl.
how does anyone find their place in the world?
